Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation team is seeking a dedicated and versatile Maintenance Worker to join our front-line team in Wirrimanu, Balgo.
This critical role involves the upkeep and maintenance of all equipment, buildings, and facilities within our enterprise portfolio.
About the Balgo Community:
Balgo, also known as Wirrimanu, is one of Australia's most remote Aboriginal communities, located in the south-east Kimberley region of Western Australia. Situated within the Shire of Halls Creek, Balgo is home to approximately 460 residents. The community predominantly speaks Kukatja, a Western Desert language, with other languages such as Walmajarri, Jaru, Pintupi, Warlpiri, and Kriol also spoken.
Balgo is equipped with essential services, provided by Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation's Administration Office, the Balgo Clinic supported by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The community also operates a general store, providing access to necessary goods.
This vibrant and culturally rich community reflects the resilience and heritage of the Aboriginal people in one of Australia's most remote regions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Routine Inspections & Repairs: Conduct regular inspections and perform necessary repairs on equipment, machinery, and facilities.
- Maintenance Tasks: Handle both minor and major fixes, including veranda construction, wall and ceiling repairs, and installation of fixtures such as light fittings, rangehoods, and mirrors.
- Equipment & System Maintenance: Check control panels, troubleshoot issues, install appliances, and maintain ventilation and air conditioning systems.
- General Upkeep: Perform various cleaning activities, from dusting to mopping, after completing tasks, and manage garden/yard upkeep, including mowing lawns and trash collection.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Business Manager and Airport Manager during renovations, and liaise with the Operations Manager/CEO on specific duties.
- Supervision: Occasionally supervise the team from Balgo, Billiluna, or Mulan, ensuring effective communication and coordination.
- Higher Duties: Perform higher duties as required, with appropriate compensation.
Key Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
- Experience: 1-2 years in a similar role, with proven experience as an assistant director or in a related position. Experience working within a remote Indigenous environment is highly valued.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A trade certification is desirable.
- Skills & Knowledge: Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, along with experience using hand and electrical tools. Ability to read technical manuals and drawings is essential.
- Leadership & Independence: Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop others. Capability to work unsupervised and adapt to a flexible workday based on client needs.
- Certifications: Must have a manual driver’s license, Senior First Aid, and CPR certification.
- Safety & Compliance: Understanding of Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Communication & Flexibility: Excellent communication skills and a willingness to travel as needed.
- Physical Fitness: The role involves working within a remote community and driving to surrounding Indigenous communities. Candidates must be physically fit, and a medical clearance will be required.
What We Offer:
Salary Package: Competitive remuneration of $80,000 to $95,000 per annum pending on experience, plus superannuation. Salary packaging options are available.
Annual Leave: Five weeks of annual leave, with an additional 17.5% leave loading.
Benefits: A travel allowance of $5,000 per annum is provided after a qualifying period, along with other attractive benefits.
Work Vehicle: A company vehicle, including fuel, will be provided for work purposes.
Accommodation: Fully furnished and heavily subsidised accommodation, including internet, electricity, and water, is included.
